According to “The Hollywood Reporter,” “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” beat out the midnight box office record for last summer’s “The Dark Knight.” The sixth in the series of popular wizard flicks brought in $22.2 million from 3,003 midnight showings on Wednesday, beating the $18 million midnight record set by Heath Ledger’s much-anticipated Batman premiere last July. “The Hollywood Reporter” also noted:
The midnight coin for “Prince” compares to a $12 million haul from similar showtimes for the last “Potter” pic, 2007′s “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.” That was part of a first-day tally for “Phoenix” totaling $44.2 million.
“We’re ecstatic,” Warners domestic distribution president Dan Fellman said. “We owe a big thanks to the Harry Potter fans, who are supporting us so well even after the picture was moved back.”
Total opening day bank for “Harry Potter” was $58.4 million, and ranks second for a Wednesday opening ever, just behind June’s $62 million “Transformers” premiere. “The Dark Knight” still reigns supreme though for total opening day sales, with a staggering $67.2 million record.
