So you’ve seen “Anchorman” more than a few times, and you can quote Ron Burgundy and Veronica Corningstone‘s infamous first date conversation about Germany’s discovery of San Diego. Big deal. Frat house flicks don’t count in the grand scheme of accurate movie quoting. To be a true movie buff, you need to know all of the famous one-liners that have become a part of pop culture…wrongly. You’ll be surprised to know how many misquotes are out there– and here are just some of our favorites. The Take Three counts it down from five all the way to the most egregious number one.
5. “Hello, Clarice…” (The Silence of the Lambs, 1991). Who could forget Hannibal Lector’s disturbing tone, greeting Clarice Starling from his jail cell? Anytime you want to freak your friends out late at night, it’s this line, Jack Nicholson from “The Shining” or Chucky. Except if you use this line, you’ve got it wrong. But never fear– Ridley Scott made up for it in his 2001 sequel “Hannibal” and included the misquote for the longevity of pop culture.
Actual quote: “Good evening, Clarice.”
4. “Do you feel lucky, punk?” (Dirty Harry, 1971). Clint Eastwood was the man in the 70′s, and let’s face it– he’s still the man and proved it just last year in “Gran Torino.” There’s no denying him. And over the years, it’s probably been easier to simplify his famous “Dirty Harry” quote so it would roll off the tongue just a bit easier. But know your Clint Eastwood, and know your movie quotes.
Actual quote: ”You’ve got to ask yourself one question: ‘Do I feel lucky?’ Well, do ya punk?”
3. “Why can’t I quit you?” (Brokeback Mountain, 2005). Heath Ledger, Michelle Williams and Jake Gyllenhaal were all nominated for Oscars in this famed flick, but it was director Ang Lee who took home the gold. Perhaps even more famous than its crude and silly tag line as a “gay cowboy movie” was Gyllenhaal’s end-of-movie one-liner, thinking back on his life and his love.
Actual quote: ”I wish I knew how to quit you.”
2. “Play it again, Sam.” (Casablanca, 1942). Ah, “Casablanca”…one of the greatest movies of all time– or at least according to AFI. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s a must on your to-watch list, and has many famous quotes, including “Here’s looking at you, kid,” “Of all the gin joints in all the towns…” and “I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.” Those have all seemed to stay accurate over the years, but not this one– number two on our list of outrageous movie misquotes.
Actual quote: “You played it for her, you can play it for me. If she can stand it, I can. Play it!”
1. “Luke, I am your father…” (The Empire Strikes Back, 1980). We don’t know about you, but we grew up saying “Luke, I am your father” into a fan…but maybe that was just Chris Farley’s influence in “Tommy Boy.” When The Take Three sat down last summer to watch all six “Star Wars” movies in tandem– like all good movie watchers must do at some point– we were more than a little surprised that this, arguably the most famous of all movie quotes, was in fact…WRONG. Don’t believe us? Follow your destiny and see for yourself below.
Actual quote: ”No. I am your father.”
