When we got home last night, our December “Vanity Fair” was waiting in the mail for us, with the lovely Robert Pattinson on the cover. Oh, were we excited. Then later in the evening when we turned on Conan, we were so pleasantly surprised to see Miss Kristen Stewart headlining his guests for the evening– trumping Judd Apatow and Carrie Underwood. Oh yes, last night, if we hadn’t realized it before, we knew that Twilight mania has begun once again. “New Moon” and your Friday premiere: We’re ready for you.
The realization that Twilight fever is all around us led us to tonight’s blog: A countdown of our five favorite Twilight pop culture moments of recent(ish) history. We’ve noticed oh so many parodies and tributes, but the cream is rising to the top; check out our top five. (And as an extra treat, if you read allllllllll the way to the end of this post, you get to see the entire R. Pattinson spread of photos from December’s “Vanity Fair.” You’re welcome, in advance.)
5. “Best Week Ever” Poster Comparison. An oldie but a goodie, this spring spoof still has us laughing out loud. Back in May, the big “New Moon” news was the release of the official movie poster, after a few fan-created posters had been hanging around the internet. “Best Week Ever” shows us the difference between the terrible, fake version and the awesome, extremely official-like version. You must see this!
4. Cody Devaroe, “The Tonight Show’s” Brooding Vampire. Before interviewing Stewart last night, Conan made sure to poke fun at the Twilight franchise. And what better way than by hiring his very own sexy vampire? Fast forward to 10:15 for the full sketch– complete with a werewolf, and oh yes, a mummy. All shirtless, of course!
3. December 2009 “Vanity Fair” Photo Spread. Let’s face it– this posting reeks of the current “Vanity Fair” cover story, and we’re not one bit embarrassed by that. The photos are beautiful, and not just because they feature Robert Pattinson– but because they’re “Vanity Fair” photos shot by Bruce Weber, and because that alone is enough to make for an amazing spread. And the article isn’t half bad either– take a break from your drooling and give it a read.
2. RobertIsBothered.com. Jimmy Fallon makes a pretty good Robert Pattinson, it turns out. We like the Robert Is Bothered spoofs because they have Fallon playing Pattinson himself– terrible English accent and all. And so it’s not just a spoof on Twilight, but rather, a completely random and totally fabricated idea: That Robert Pattinson is bothered by a lot of ridiculous things. Namely, Halloween, Shark Week, Snickers ads and Daniel Radcliffe. We don’t really get it, but that’s why it’s ridiculously hilarious.
1. “Saturday Night Live’s” Firelight Spoof. SNL’s digital shorts have been on the map since “The Chroni(What?!)cles of Narnia” hit theaters in December 2005. When Taylor Swift hosted the show on November 7, a truly funny short made the cut, turning Edward into Frankenstein and Jacob into a mummy. With the build-up to “New Moon,” the sketch pokes fun at the iconic scene (and one of our favorites) from the first Twilight book and film where the Cullens first walk into the lunchroom. Strangled by accident, you say? Only if it’s Taylor Swift and Bill Hader.
And now, since you waited ever so patiently, please enjoy Bruce Weber’s “Vanity Fair” photos of Mr. Pattinson, reproduced here so expertly with our iPhone. In this case, we’re valuing thoroughness over quality, and so should you. However, we highly encourage you to pick up your own copy of the magazine! There’s a photo of Rob eating corn and drinking Rolling Rock that got cut off below but absolutely belongs in a J. Crew catalogue, and another couple brooding black and white pics that were inadvertently cropped. This is our way of saying, long live print journalism! Now get out there and contribute to the economy already by buying your very own copy.
